NSEC Lead Weston-super-Mare Carnival Cleansing

On Friday 7th November North Somerset Environment Company (NSEC) attended this years Weston-super-Mare Carnival, supporting them in Recycling & Waste Collection and Event Cleansing.

The annual carnival in Weston-super-Mare is one of many carnivals in the Somerset area, attracting over 80,000 spectators in 2025. The event consists of over 100 floats which are designed by local businesses, schools and other members of the Somerset community displaying the very best of what the West Country has to offer. The floats follow a strategic route across Weston-super-Mare allowing the streets to be lined with members of the local community supporting and cheering their favourite floats, whilst raising money for some brilliant local charities.

The NSEC team of 15 volunteers were distributed at different areas to ensure the event stayed clean and helped attendees recycle their waste correctly in new ‘Recycling Stations’.

These stations were a first for NSEC and consisted of multiple sections for the public to place their detritus into, encouraging recycling and reducing waste. These allow provision for Plastic & Cans, Glass, Food, General Waste and Cardboard, with the overall perception and feedback of these stations being extremely positive. There were 5 of these installations located across the procession route, designed to stand out and enable easy access for spectators at all times.

NSEC were also extremely proud to have been invited to include two of their vehicles in the procession, the first at the front of the procession being one of the innovative, new Romaquip Kerbsort trucks introduced during the summer as part of the service change to three-weekly refuse collections and introduction of Soft Plastic collections, this one being driven by NSEC’s very own Grinch (Andy Lowrie). The other closely followed at the back of the procession with one of NSEC’s Supervisors Driving, accompanied in the cab by their children, all dressed up in the spirit of carnival. Behind our last vehicle we had a group of litter pickers to ensure any detritus left over on the streets of our neighbourhood was collected and cleaned, with our litter picking team each covering an estimated 25,000 steps through the night to keep our town clean.

The NSEC Event Cleansing team work tirelessly to ensure that Weston-super-Mare was kept spotless after this major event, meaning that our community was able to celebrate the festivities without any adverse effect to our neighbourhood street scene. The team also spoke to a number of spectators through the evening about recycling, waste and any other questions they had about NSEC’s involvement at this year’s carnival.

NSEC Project Manager, Shane Young, stated after the event that he “couldn’t be prouder of our NSEC Event Cleansing team. Their hard work at this year’s Weston-super-Mare Carnival was nothing short of outstanding, showing commitment, professionalism, and true pride in the community we serve, whilst expressing all of our company values”.

On behalf of NSEC, Shane would also “like to extend our gratitude to the many vendors and businesses at the event who kindly provided our team with hot drinks, soft drinks and snacks to keep them going throughout the night. We are very grateful to the Weston-super-Mare Carnival organisers for inviting North Somerset Environment Company to contribute and take part in such a prestigious event in our local area. It’s events like this that bring our community together and bring light and joy into the area.”
