North Somerset Environment Company are proud to be celebrating our 5 year anniversary, a milestone made possible by the hard work, dedication, and community spirit of our colleagues, partners, and residents across North Somerset.
In 2021, under the leadership of our founding Managing Director, Brian Veale, North Somerset Environment Company was formed and began delivering the Local Authority waste and recycling collection contract for North Somerset. From day one, our focus was on reliable services, safety, and doing the right thing for our communities and the environment.
By 2022, we were ready to set our long‑term direction with the launch of our 5‑year business plan and began our journey of commercial growth through the acquisition of our Hiab Grab Vehicle, unlocking the possibility of commercial fly tip clearances.
2023 saw us evolve to overcome some of the challenges presented to us, such as the industry wide driver shortage, we responded proactively to industry‑wide driver shortages by creating our own Driver Training Academy, investing in people from our local area and building skills for the future. We also established our Commercial Collection Service, expanding our offer to support local businesses with sustainable, dependable waste and recycling solutions. We also continued a programme of improvements with our operational teams, getting critical feedback and working with our crews when deciding on which devices to utilise for operational data capture and route sheet provision.
2024 was a year of significant operational growth. We successfully mobilised our new waste transfer contract at Aisecome Way, strengthening the backbone of our collection services and improving the efficiency of how materials are handled and moved through our system. Our event cleansing business also took a step forward, including our work at the RHL Weston Beach Race, helping to keep a flagship local event clean and welcoming for visitors. Later in the year, we were delighted to welcome colleagues at Sandford Depot as we mobilised our Highways contract, broadening our remit and bringing new teams into the North Somerset Environment Company family.
In 2025, we entered a period of significant business change and renewal. Stuart Jellings was promoted to Managing Director, bringing fresh energy and focus to our next chapter, and Bryan Menzies joined as Operations Director, strengthening our leadership team with additional operational expertise. We continued to grow and learn in event cleansing, building our reputation for supporting large scale events. We undertook a large-scale collections fleet replacement, modernising our vehicles to improve reliability, safety, environmental performance, and the working environment for our crews. Alongside this, we implemented collections route optimisation, helping us to use resources more efficiently and reduce our environmental impact. We were proud to pioneer kerbside soft plastic collections, trialling and delivering new ways for residents to recycle more of their everyday materials. We also introduced business‑wide telematics systems, giving us better insight into how our fleet operates and helping us drive improvements in safety, performance, and sustainability.
Our commercial services experienced exciting growth, including signing a new contract with Thatchers for waste and recycling services, a partnership that reflects our capability and the trust placed in us by local businesses. Our Training Academy also continued to grow, developing both new and existing colleagues and strengthening our pipeline of skilled drivers and operational staff. Community involvement became an even more central part of who we are. Our colleagues helped raise sponsorship in the Weston Half Marathon for Weston Hospicecare and the Monkey Tree charity. We also supported Weston Carnival cleansing on a volunteer basis.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far. Here’s to the next five years of serving North Somerset and supporting our communities.
